How do I use the Faction Map properly?

As I'm not new to the concept of factions servers and what not, something I am relatively new to is the Faction Map item that you can buy at the shop at spawn. I used it a few times and saw that in the chat box, it seemed to draw a sort of map. In that map, there were some lines and X's, some white, some green. All of the times that I used it, I was very confused on what that meant, and just manually walked around, looking for faction claims.
