I'm back, but what's with the forum change?

After leaving Project Mayhem for a few months, I came back and I noticed that I wasn't able to log in to my account. I did some browsing, and noticed that the server switched to a new forum. But why wasn't my log-in information retained? Or anybody's, for that matter? What was the point of the switch that was more important than retaining everyone's log-in info?
